Or die for your country, or vote for the leaders of the world, or own property, or embrace other vices that might be in some way detrimental…

But heaven forbid they drink the one thing humanity as been drinking since society began, even more than they did water, because the water wasn’t safe.

It’s absolute stupidity.

thank you

I forgot marrying. That you can marry legally at 15 in some places with parental consent, therefore be an emancipated minor who is officially allowed to have children…but you still can’t drink alcohol, is just uncatergoirzable insanity.

You can sign up for the armed forces and literally give your life for your country at 18, but you can’t legally sip a glass of wine at your own (arguably way too early) wedding at 18.

England (and other countries) have the drinking age set to 18, and I don’t think their problems involving alcohol and alcoholism are any worse than ours.

Of course underage drinking is so taboo here that if you immediately repealed the age to 18 then there’d be hundreds more alcohol poisoning cases instantly.

That is because people treat their children as appendages and not people they should be talking to, who character needs informative discussion, who require education.

I put it to you, that every country that has a low drinking age, has far less rates of alcoholism later in life.

eeeeh, it depends a lot on local culture imo. NZ has a drinking age of 18, and relatively low rates of alcoholism, but we as a culture have huge issues with binge-drinking and its effects (death from alcohol poisoning, injury, road accidents from drunk driving, etc). Europe, on average, is a lot better than us with this.

What are the age groups of the highest rates of alcoholism and binge drinking?

Really cool video on China’s Forbidden City and how the architecture was designed so that it could withstand even a 10.1 earthquake! This is just one example of how certain civilizations would adapt structures to the terrain they lived on.

Yet another reason history is critical. Humans are so in love with their own generation they seldom consider what it took to bring them there.

This storm gets scarier and scarier by the hour. Cubans, and Floridans……, my thoughts and prayers go out to y’all.

“Just how big and powerful is Hurricane Irma? According to the National Hurricane Center, it is the strongest Atlantic basin hurricane ever recorded. As it clears the Caribbean and bears down on the US Southeast, here are some other shocking numbers and facts to keep in mind:

70,000: The square mileage of Irma’s tropical storm force winds. That’s larger than the area of Florida, which is 65,000 square miles.

300 miles: The diameter of those tropical storm force winds, which is about twice as wide as Florida’s peninsula.

185 miles per hour: The top strength of Irma’s maximum sustained winds (though it has since dropped). 1992’s Hurricane Andrew, the most destructive hurricane to hit Florida, had maximum winds of 175 mph. Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned that Irma was “bigger, faster and stronger” than Andrew, which hit as a Category 5.40 million”

Reminder that people don’t take hurricanes with female names as seriously as hurricanes with male names and you really fucking should.

@weavemama Yup. People die more often in hurricanes when they have female names than male ones, even if the hurricane was less severe.

People think if it’s a woman it can’t be as powerful or severe, and don’t take necessary precautions, leading Nature to do its thing and let Darwinism take the wheel.

Whoooaaa I didn’t even know this. I don’t even pay that much attention to hurricane names, it’s shame how people bring sexism into it when no one of that should even matter. Whether a hurricane is named after a male, female, dinosaur, fashion brand, ect……if professionals say that shit is dangerous, that shit is dangerous and YOU NEED TO TAKE THE PROPER SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.

Hurricane names are chosen by regions, using names that are popular in the region associated so that they can be easily remembered. They alternate in gender and are named alphabetically. Which means, every other hurricane will have a female name. I highly recommend that the service do away with names. They should instead adopt a number system. Humans are too susceptible to suggestion

“We were never that close”

Yeah, I can see why.

I pity her daughter for the misfortune of being born to this piece of absolute shit.

okay but you should really read the full response to this though:

I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around this letter. I encourage you to reread it and to ask yourself that time-honored question, “Do I sound like a villain in a Reese Witherspoon movie?” You are, presumably, sympathetic to your own situation and are invested in making sure that you come across as reasonable and as caring as possible, and yet you have written a letter indicting yourself at every turn. This girl is “like a daughter” to you, and yet you want to shove her to the side of your other daughter’s wedding just because she walks with a limp. Your daughter’s wedding will be perfect with Katie as a full and honored member of the bridal party. A limp is not a fly in the ointment; it’s a part of Katie’s life. It is not only wrong to have asked your daughter to consider excluding her best friend over this—it is ableist, and cruel, and it speaks to a massive failure of empathy, compassion, and grace on your part. You must and should apologize to your daughter immediately, and I encourage you to profoundly reconsider the orientation of your heart.

Well said.

The wedding isn’t about aesthetics. If that is the substance you seek, then life will be unbearably disappointing for you. “Perfection” is your daughter marrying someone she loves and trusts, and surrounding herself with those she cares about, welcoming them to become a part of this new phase of her life, as they were all the others. “Perfection” would be you pulling your head from your own arse long enough to see you dehumanized a young lady you claim to love, called her unsightly, diminished her character, her mind, and her spirit down to one leg that happens to malfunction. “Perfection” will be your life in thirty years, when you begin to lose the control of your bowels and have to rely on others to wipe your backside, when you have to argue that biology has nothing to do with your character, when you have to endure what it means to be treated disrespectfully by someone in your own family or peer group because your body won’t obey you.

“Perfection” would be erasing the unmitigated sociopathy that is clearly behind this letter.
