I’m not sure if I’m projecting or your post happened to hit on recognizable details. But when in the decade dills post, were you in Chicago? It’s one of the few cities in the US that has double and triple layer streets. I’ve actually seen some of the channels you described. Also it’s really cool that not only did windows later become doors, but some buildings were literally jacked up and then hastily reinforced. (asking not anon so you don’t have to publish to answer. I’m just curious)

I was near Chicago in the mid 1800’s. What I was describing was not in Chicago. Chicago is a swamp flat, not a tidal flat. The city I was talking about was tidal, but that’s a good guess.
