White nationalists generally don’t want to look like characters out of American History X anymore. Fashion choices at the convention ranged from Ruby Ridge to Mad Men, but most of the people there looked like you might run into them on Capitol Hill or in the U-District. That said, there is a type. According to my observations, the standard Seattle Nazi is a white male under 30 who either works in the tech industry or is going to school to work in the tech industry. “You’re also a coder? Do you mind if I send you something I’ve been working on?” I heard that more than once.

“That movie Hidden Figures was bullshit,” a guy dressed like John Goodman in The Big Lebowski said out of nowhere. “We never went to the moon, Stanley Kubrick faked all of it.” Water almost squirted out of my nose and it was the closest I came all night to breaking character.

I wonder when liberals are going to stop pretending racists are just a bunch of rural rednecks and start taking a serious approach in combating racism. And conservatives are outraged whenever they perceive an “Inquisition” like “you can’t hold conservative views anymore in your job:(” gee I wonder why my guy.

Washington State has one of the largest neonazi, white nationalist, militia populations in the country, but most of them do tend to live inland. These people are subversive and beneath cover, but people know they exist.

But let’s go back in time a bit, because Seattle has had a deep culture of racism since the 1870′s. From taking advantage of indigenous peoples, to herding Chinese immigrants into boats to try and forcibly remove them, to burning down the International district, to interning the owners of Japanese landmarks and vandalizing their property while they were gone. There have been riots over racism a half dozen times this century. There have been just as many problems with racist white groups as there have been with any gang. Bank robberies to fund White Nationalism. Marches. Thinly veiled rhetoric. For the entire 19th century and much of the 20th, the Seattle Police were as corrupt as if not moreso than Chicago.

We know Seattle has a racist core. Many people who move in, do so believing they are escaping that, and they create a very rich surface culture that is worth enjoying, but there is always the core there, and those of us who’ve seen it know it exists.

We may even know where to find some of these people.

I was thinking of escaping to Seattle/Portland. I guess now I know it’s just as bad or even worse. Welp no sense running. That was my backup plan.

“Just as bad” is an incorrect term. Racism exists. There is no escaping it. No utopian society. There’s just this. With regard to Seattle, the surface culture I mentioned is helping, because it is making racism less and less acceptable or viable. It is subsuming the racism even more, which means they will begin to react. This in turn means that dominant surface culture must lash back, and make it clear that racism will be strangled and carved out like a cancer. It’s the interplay, the reactions that get rid of racism. Not festering silence. SO by all means, go to seattle to fight racism, but fight it wherever you find yourself.
